Information for Healthcare Professionals

Cancer-related anemia is complex due to the multiple mechanisms that can contribute to its development. If a patient has cancer and is anemic, determining whether the anemia was present prior to the diagnosis of the cancer can further help determine the etiology of the anemia.

In patients who have cancer and are anemic, the anemia can be inherited, due to a medical issue unrelated to cancer, related to the cancer itself, or the cancer treatment. Myelosuppressive chemotherapy is a significant contributing
factor to anemia in patients with cancer.1
